Independence at School :)
Many years back, while in school, Independence Day was celebrated with a patriotic songs competition. Each class put out its best singers boys and girls to sing the patriotic songs in chorus and the peons on the drums and other string musical instruments.
Each class prized its singers and cheered them with all their heart. Most of the songs were Hindi songs bar a few. And it was always Ae mere watan ke logon that bagged the first prize.
The singers had an added incentive - they had to bunk classes and practice and as audience we got to hear many classes practicing for the 10 days before the event. We would request our teachers to give us 10 minutes break in between so that the team could practice. I was always a cheerleader all but once I did get a chance to be a chance of that famed chorus of singers - my moments of fame as a voice in the chorus of about 15 children. Thanks to my music teacher and I express my gratitude to all those who patiently bear my baritone for 20 long minutes as far as my memories go...
Its about 5 years since the last time I attended the school function. But seeing the state of the nation today, these songs seem blank.Of course, I accept that they are absolutely awesome but are pointless now.
Hum honge kaamyaab - perhaps, but 60 years later, we are still not kaamyaab against many basic problems. And we seem to battle corruption as a monster that has completely got etched in the annals of Indian History.
Dulhan Chali - 60 odd years later, the bride is anything but a bride and is somewhere everyday killed for dowry making the adage very true--- Maanav-dahez ka dhaanav ( Human-- Dowry demon)
Ae mere watan ke logon - But now the people have completely forgotten the immortal martyrs and of course themselves too in the rat race for name ..fame and many more......India has become a place where the Olympic Winners get a fat recognition amount while the people who protect the border are forgotten forever...
Hope the day is not too far when these songs gain their perfect meaning in the present circumstances.
